How Bulk Assign Variant Images Works

The Bulk Assign feature in Rubik Variant Images & Swatch allows you to assign variant images to hundreds of products automatically, as long as your product images follow a consistent grouping structure.

This feature works with products that already have images grouped by variant, where the first image of each group is assigned to the related variant.

Bulk Assign analyzes the order of your product images inside Shopify and automatically groups them based on the option you select, such as Color. It assigns each group of images to the correct variant across all selected products.

To work correctly, your product media must follow this structure:

  • All images must be arranged in sequential groups by variant
  • Each group must begin with that variant’s Shopify assigned featured image

Example:

Black (variant image) → Black → Black → Black

Orange (variant image) → Orange → Orange

Green (variant image) → Green → Green → Green

Rubik detects each variant featured image and collects all images that follow it until the next variant featured image appears. This allows the system to automatically identify image groups with high accuracy. If your product media follows this exact order, Bulk Assign will correctly assign variant images across multiple products.

Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Select an Example Product

Choose a product that already has properly grouped images in Shopify media.

Rubik will use this product as a reference to understand your image structure.

Example structure:

  1. Orange (variant image)
  2. Orange
  3. Orange
  4. Black (variant image)
  5. Black
  6. Black
  7. Green (variant image)
  8. Green
  9. Green

The first image of each group must be the official variant image assigned in Shopify.

Step 2: Choose the Option That Controls Image Changes

Select the variant option that determines which images should change. For most products, this is the Color option, but any option that defines visual differences can be selected.

Example values:

  • Orange
  • Black
  • Green

Step 3: Preview the Result

Rubik will show a preview of how it detects each variant group based on your image order. If the preview looks incorrect, you must reorganize your images in Shopify media before continuing.

Step 4: Bulk Assign to All Products

Once the preview is correct:

  1. Choose which products you want to update
    • All products
    • Selected products
  1. Start the Bulk Assign process
  2. Rubik will assign images in the background
  3. All selected products will automatically receive their correct variant images

IMPORTANT NOTE: Bulk Assign works only when your product images are grouped in the correct order, each group begins with the official variant image assigned in Shopify, and no images are mixed or out of sequence. If your media is not organized properly, fix the order in Shopify product media before starting, and feel free to run Bulk Assign as many times as needed.
